At Wayne Health we offer a comprehensive array of family planning services.

Obstetrics and Gynecology services

Wayne Health’s Obstetrics and Gynecology team offers a wide scope of services addressing health concerns across a woman’s lifetime – from pre-reproductive care, to care throughout their childbearing and post-menopausal years. Our specialty services for women trying for pregnancy include:

  • Maternal and Fetal Medicine
  • General Obstetrics, Gynecology
  • Nurse-Midwifery
  • Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility

Wayne Health’s experienced obstetricians, gynecologists and midwives provide services ranging from routine well-woman care to state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical techniques. Our maternal fetal medicine specialists manage high-risk pregnancies to keep the baby healthier and decrease the likelihood of premature birth. Our fertility and endocrinology specialists can help determine what factors may be causing fertility issues and work with you on a personalized approach for your reproductive challenges.

Non-hormonal pregnancy prevention

  • Fertility awareness
  • Barrier contraception with condoms
  • Prescriptions for Phexxi (non-hormone-based gel that is used each time you have sex)
  • Placement of the copper intrauterine device (Paragard) that lasts for 12 years

Hormonal pregnancy prevention

We can offer hormonal options that help regulate periods, decrease heavy bleeding, improve acne, stabilize mood and prevent menstrual migraines while providing contraception. These include:

  • Oral contraceptive pills with estrogen/progestin (or progestin alone)
  • Patch
  • Ring
  • 3-month shot (Depo Provera)
  • Implant (Nexplanon) that lasts for 3-5 years
  • Levonorgestrel intrauterine device (Mirena). It’s FDA approved for 7 years of pregnancy prevention.

The devices can be placed on the day of your first appointment in most patients who can be reasonably sure they aren’t pregnant. Anyone else can come for counseling and have the device scheduled at their convenience.

Prescriptions and counseling on how to use emergency contraception

Including:

  • Plan B
  • Ulipristal (Ella)
  • Copper and levonorgestrel intrauterine devices.

Emergency contraceptives are most useful in the first 5 days after unprotected sex.

Counseling and care for patients with complex medical problems

We offer counseling and tailored discussions with patients with complex medical problems that can impact their options for contraception like hypertension, bleeding disorders, uterine anomalies, sickle cell disease, HIV, seizure disorders, mood disorders, history of gastric bypass surgeries, cardiac conditions, stroke and reproductive cancers.

We also offer abortion services for medically complex patients in the hospital. Due to state law, abortions are not covered by insurance or Medicaid/Medicare unless pregnancy threatens the life of the mother or is the result of rape or incest. Many patients who cannot access abortion at an outpatient abortion facility due to having conditions such as heart failure or bleeding disorders can see us to schedule their procedures.

Sterilization services

At Wayne Health, we have physicians available to schedule patients for minimally invasive sterilization, whether they have already had children or not, and at any age with adequate counseling. Sterilization is a permanent procedure that involves a physician removing the fallopian tubes. This cannot be reversed later if a person changes their mind. Women who are unsure should ask about our long-acting contraception options. We also can refer to Wayne Health Urology for partners who would like to have vasectomies (male sterilization). We are limited by some restrictions in our ability to offer sterilization below the age of 21 due to federal law.
