Overview

Wayne Health's approach to treatment

Wayne Health’s Neuro-Oncology team performs a comprehensive evaluation including a physical exam, neurological exam, CT scan and MRI to determine a patient’s diagnosis. A team physician also reviews all of the patient’s records, requests any needed additional testing, and presents the patient’s diagnostic information at a multidisciplinary team conference. After the team conference, this physician shares the team’s recommendations with the patient and family members. If other testing is required, or if other specialists need to be seen as part of the proposed treatment plan, those appointments are made the same day or as soon as is convenient for the patient.

Our full-range of treatment options include:

  • Conventional and computer-assisted neurosurgery
  • Micro-neurosurgery
  • Brain mapping/awake craniotomy
  • Endoscopic neurosurgery
  • Complex spine surgery
  • Gamma Knife radiosurgery
  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy

Patients and family members also have access to a wide range of Karmanos Cancer Institute support groups. For more information about support groups, go to: https://www.karmanos.org/karmanos/education-support-with-karmanos

Advancing research and medical education

Wayne Health physicians and researchers are also faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine who conduct basic research and clinical studies. This can make the latest treatments and clinical trials available to you sooner than other providers without a medical school affiliation.

Wayne Health researchers are involved in clinical trials that use genetic characteristics of an individual patient’s tumor to custom-design the best treatment, and that use advanced imaging and laboratory research to measure a patient’s response to treatments.
