The Neuro-Ophthalmology department at Wayne Health treats a variety of visual problems that are caused by abnormalities of the visual system. Most of these problems involve not only the eyes, but also the visual pathways that connect the eyes to the visual centers in the brain, and also to the central nervous system areas controlling eye movements.
(ERG) and/or visual-evoked potentials (VEP), and neuro-imaging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computed tomography (CT). The initial evaluation usually takes two to three hours.
Wayne Health’s Neuro-Ophthalmology service is based at the Kresge Eye Institute and is directed by Robert L. Tomsak, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Tomsak has been practicing clinical neuro-ophthalmology exclusively for more than 40 years and is professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
As physicians and researchers affiliated with the Wayne State School of Medicine, Wayne Health’s Neuro-Ophthalmology department is involved in patient-centered clinical research and also collaborates with basic scientists involved in vision research. This makes the latest clinical trials and treatments available to our patients sooner than other providers without a medical school affiliation.
The Neuro-Ophthalmology department is also very strongly committed to Ophthalmology and Neurology resident teaching and clinical training as part of Wayne State’s medical school.
