Wayne Health's approach to treatment

Wayne Health’s Neurogenetics Clinic provides counseling and testing for asymptomatic individuals at risk for adult-onset inherited disorders, such as Huntington’s disease or spinocerebellar ataxias. This includes extensive counseling to make sure that a patient makes well-informed decisions and is prepared to cope with their diagnosis and all of its implications. We work closely with the Reproductive Genetics program at Hutzel Women’s Hospital and can facilitate referrals for those interested in reproductive testing options.

Wayne Health’s genetic professionals also oversee the pre-symptomatic genetic diagnosis of individuals from families with a history of genetic conditions, and provide comprehensive genetic counseling services for both individuals and families. The clinic is a regional enzyme replacement center for Fabry disease, Pompe disease and related disorders for which enzyme replacement therapy is a treatment option.

Advancing research and medical education

Physicians and researchers at Wayne Health are faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine who conduct basic research and clinical studies. This makes the latest treatments and clinical trials available to you sooner than other health providers without a medical school affiliation.

In addition to patient care, the Neurogenetics Clinic works to identify the causes of genetic disorders for which the underlying cause is not known and stays informed of recently identified causes. Our providers network with other neurogenetics researchers around the world to assist in research studies aimed at identifying the causes of disorders that are not currently well understood.
