Meet the provider: Andrew Isaacson, M.D.

September 29, 2021

Andrew Isaacson, M.D., Department of Surgery, joined Wayne Health in 2019. He has special interest in trauma surgery, surgical critical care, robotic surgery and surgical stabilization of rib and sternum fractures.

Dr. Isaacson chose Wayne Health when he returned back to Detroit to provide service to his hometown. He grew up in a neighboring suburb of Detroit and he’s always held a special connection to the city. He always knew that he wanted to return to this city and teach the art of surgery with the Wayne State University Department of Surgery. He believes that the people of Detroit are the greatest, no matter where they might be in the world. Being able to serve and help them is a great honor for him.

Dr. Isaacson attended Eastern Michigan University for undergrad, Wayne State University School of Medicine for medical school and completed his residency in general surgery at Wayne State University/DMC. He did a two-year acute surgery fellowship affiliated with Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. This consisted of a one-year trauma surgery fellowship at Grady Memorial Hospital (one of the five busiest trauma centers in the U.S.). The second year was a surgical critical care year done at both Grady Memorial and Emory University Hospital working in the various intensive care units (neuro ICU, trauma ICU, cardiac ICU, liver transplant ICU and surgical ICU). Dr. Isaacson chose surgery because he loves being able to see a patient with a problem, go and fix the problem and follow them through recovery.

When it comes to patient care, Dr. Isaacson recognizes it as a team effort between the patient, himself and his team. They all work together from pre-op through recovery to help the patient get better. He helps to calm his patients nerves before a surgery by keeping open communication and answering all of their questions. Dr. Isaacson’s patients have taught him many things. When he thinks he has seen it all, something new happens.

His most impactful experience in healthcare to date has been the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing the way his healthcare team from all levels came together to support one another and fight not only a horrible disease, but the constant ongoing battle against misinformation and anti-science.

So far in his career, Dr. Isaacson is most proud of how he continually challenges himself and grows as a surgeon; constantly trying to learn and add new ways to take care of his patients. He never settles. Dr. Isaacson is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care by the American College of Surgeons. He was honored with Hour Detroit Magazine’s Top Doc Award of 2020. He has won a handful of awards, including the 2019-2020 Faculty Teaching Award from Wayne State University School of Medicine, the 2019 Chiu-Kumar Critical Care Award of Excellence at Emory University School of Medicine and the 2016-2017 Resident Teaching Award (Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center). He earned the 2018 Fellow in training scholarship recipient at the 77th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Clinical Congress of Acute Care Surgery & 4th World Trauma Congress.

In his free time, Dr. Isaacson enjoys golfing and spending time with his family.
