Dr. James Rowley elected secretary/treasurer of American Academy of Sleep Medicine from Wayne State University School of Medicine

James Rowley, M.D., professor of Internal Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, was elected secretary/treasurer of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Board of Directors during its annual membership meeting June 14.
“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is the largest professional organization dedicated exclusively to the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine,” said Dr. Rowley, chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and program director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowships. “The AASM sets standards for sleep centers, develops clinical practice guidelines to promote high-quality care and promotes excellence in sleep medicine education and research, while also providing public advocacy to advance its mission and vision.”
Dr. Rowley, who will serve a three-year term as secretary/treasurer, has served on the AASM Board of Directors since 2016. He previously served as chair of the Education Committee, vice chair of the Accreditation Committee, and as a member of the Standards of Practice Committee. During his time on the board of directors, he has served as president of the AASM Foundation, liaison to the Accreditation Committee, Payer Policy Review Committee and the Associated Professional Sleep Societies Program Committee, and as a member of the Guidelines Advisory Panel.
“I am very honored to have been elected secretary-treasurer of the AASM. My involvement in the AASM has grown over the last decade as I strongly believe in its vision that ‘sleep is recognized as essential to health.’ While I have actively participated in guideline development for physicians, I am particularly excited that the AASM is moving toward doing more public advocacy and awareness of the importance of sleep to overall health, said Dr. Rowley, who also is medical director of the Detroit Receiving Hospital Sleep Disorders Center. “We are also moving toward more collaboration and education with other medical specialties to educate physicians on the importance of diagnosing sleep disorders.”
After receiving his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Rowley completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Hospital and a fellowship in pulmonary/critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, where he developed his interest in sleep medicine. He is board certified in critical care medicine, pulmonary disease and sleep medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
The AASM is the leading professional society in the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine, with a combined membership of 11,000 individual members and accredited sleep centers.
