Wayne Health’s Obstetrics and Gynecology team has been recognized for excellence in women’s health care in metropolitan Detroit for decades. We offer a broad array of services and care covering every aspect of women’s health. Our team of dedicated obstetricians and gynecologists provide the highest quality care for routine to complex pregnancy and delivery, family planning and contraception, pelvic conditions, minimally invasive gynecological surgeries, menopausal and post-menopausal consultations and care, and well care.
Our Midwifery program is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2020. Hutzel Women’s Hospital was the first hospital in Michigan to grant full-scope privileges to certified nurse-midwives. Our Midwifery practice was established in 1980, and today is one of the longest-standing practices, locally and nationally. Our diverse group of midwives have a long history of excellence in providing obstetric and delivery care for women and have assisted nearly 40,000 metro Detroit mothers in safely delivering their babies since 1980. Our midwives also provide well-women care, contraceptive and family planning services, and gynecological services.
Our Wayne Health team serves as your partners in care and works hard to meet each woman’s unique needs and expectations.

Obstetricians (also called OBs) are medical doctors who specialize in the care of pregnant women, from the time of conception through delivery and the period following delivery (postpartum). Most obstetricians are also gynecologists who diagnose and treat diseases of the female reproductive system and provide care for women when they are not pregnant.
An obstetrician can further specialize in perinatology (maternal-fetal medicine), which focuses on high-risk pregnancies, testing, and fetal development. Or an obstetrician may specialize in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (care of women who have hormonal or fertility problems).
Obstetricians can be board-certified through the Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Wayne Health’s obstetrics, gynecology and nurse midwifery team offers a wide array of services and treatments that address a woman’s health care needs throughout her lifetime – from adolescence, through the reproductive and post-menopausal years.
Our team’s experience covers the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all women’s health care concerns. Treatments can include standard drug therapies, or if surgery is required, minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and myomectomy.
Wayne Health delivers high quality and comprehensive services and diagnostics for prenatal care and screenings; pregnancy and childbirth; pregnancy concerns and complications; labor and delivery; and postpartum care.
Wayne Health nurse midwives offer a holistic, education-based approach for low-risk patients that is individually tailored to meet the specific needs of each woman. The focus of the nurse midwife in delivery is to provide a normal, natural birth experience within the hospital setting. If a woman develops a medical condition that complicates her pregnancy, the midwives work in collaboration with the attending doctors to ensure access to the level of care that is needed. Nurse midwives are culturally sensitive to the needs of women of all lifestyles and ethnicities. Midwives are with women for their lifetime of care.
Wayne Health physicians and researchers are also faculty at Wayne State University School of Medicine who conduct basic, translational and clinical research. This makes the latest treatments and clinical trials available to you sooner than other providers without a medical school affiliation, and before FDA approval or commercial availability.
