Have a happy and healthy Halloween with a few ‘tricks’ from Wayne Health

October 25, 2021

Halloween is finally upon us! To join in on the fun, Wayne Health is celebrating ‘Healthoween’ by offering a few tricks, and treats, to ensure everyone has a happy and healthy Halloween.

Trick #1: Walk while trick or treating.

While it’s very tempting for parents to follow their kids with the car while trick or treating, there are plenty of health benefits when it comes to walking. Doing a moderate aerobic exercise like walking can help you to sleep better, handle stress better and keep your mind sharp. Just remember to pack an umbrella and bundle up against the Michigan elements.

Trick #2: Alleviate any Halloween anxiety

Halloween can be scary for some trick or treaters. Listen to your child’s fears and help them work through their feelings. Explain that everyone is just in costumes, and underneath they are just another person. Instead of trick or treating at night, consider going to a family-friendly trick or treating event during the day, like a trunk or treat.

Trick #3: Stop the spread of germs by safely handing out candy

On top of COVID-19, we have entered the cold and flu season. Buying prewrapped bags of candy and keeping the bag sealed until Halloween is a great way to stop the spread of germs. Make sure to wear mittens or latex-free gloves while handing out candy. If a child has a food allergy and needs a specific type of candy, let them know their options and hand out accordingly.

Trick #4: Mix it up with nutritional Halloween treats

Probably the most important part of Halloween is the treats. Don’t let the treats be limited to only candy. Try out some of these spooky, nutritious Halloween treats!

Trick #5: Bundle up!

Michigan can have very unpredictable weather. Up to 80% of total body heat loss is from your head and neck.. Heat loss in cold, wet weather increases the risk for hypothermia and cold injury. Stay ahead of the cold by bringing extra hats, mittens and scarves. Consider sizing up any costumes to fit a warm jacket underneath.

We hope everyone has a spooktacular Halloween!
