Meet the provider: Faisal Almufarrej, M.D.

September 1, 2021

Faisal Almufarrej, M.D., Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery, joined Wayne Health in November 2013. His special interests in surgery include breast lift, augmentation, reconstruction, reduction and revision; gynecomastia (male chest); tummy tuck and body contouring; liposuction and fat grafting; face, neck, eyelid and brow lifts; cheek/chin augmentation; arm/thigh lifts; rhinoplasty and otoplasty; scar revision, keloids and burn reconstruction; and pediatric plastic surgery.

Dr. Almufarrej chose Wayne Health because it offers him the flexibility to maintain a broad practice and set of skills as well as the opportunity to be specialized in an academic environment. He also enjoys teaching plastic surgery to Wayne State University School of Medicine students and Detroit Medical Center residents in training. Moreover, he loves working with his selfless, hard-working, and talented surgical and medical colleagues. He most enjoys the diversity that comes with working with the Metro Detroit community. He sees patients of different ages, sizes, skin color and languages presenting with different pathologies, needs and wants. This community has made him a more empathetic physician, smarter clinician and stronger surgeon, and for that, he is grateful.

Dr. Almufarrej grew up in Kuwait. After high school, he matriculated into a 6-year medical program at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI Dublin). In addition to being a medical school, RCSI is responsible for postgraduate surgical training in Ireland and provided him with early and broad exposure to surgical anatomy and clinical surgery as a medical student. This sparked his interest in surgery. From there he went on to complete residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. His time at Mayo Clinic as a plastic surgery trainee has reinforced the Mayo Brother’s values in his training and future practice: Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Healing, Teamwork, Innovation Excellence and Stewardship.

Following his residencies, Dr. Almufarrej completed a Craniofacial Fellowship at University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, which are uniquely positioned to provide experience and exposure to surgeries, pathologies and disease processes like nowhere else in the country. Upon completing his fellowship in Seattle, he was awarded a travelling fellowship by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen (AO), a non-profit international surgical organization which allowed him to spend time in Hong Kong and Taiwan to learn about the practice of plastic surgery in that part of the world. Dr. Almufarrej chose plastic surgery because it’s transformative. It can really affect a person’s quality of life with surgeries that not only address form but also function and well-being.

Dr. Almufarrej wants his patients to know that he’s a listener. He likes to carefully listen to all his patients and make sure both their expectations are all well-aligned before going ahead with any surgery. He helps to reassure and calm his patients’ nerves through comprehensive preoperative counseling and in-depth education about the disease process and the surgery they are about to undergo. The more the patient knows, the more they are empowered to help themselves and feel in control. He is so grateful to have so many wonderful experiences with amazing people in his profession. Most recently he was humbled by a patient who cried postoperatively in happiness claiming that she “never imagined I [she] could ever look like this”. His patients have taught him to be less hard on himself.

On his operative days, he comes into work and meets his patients in the preoperative area, operates, talks to them and their family postoperatively, repeats that until all surgeries are completed, finishes all his paperwork and then debriefs with the residents/medical students before he finally heads home. On his clinic days, he starts at 7 a.m. with a resident/student educational conference then sees patients from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the office.

Dr. Almufarrej was the recipient of a Plastic Surgery Foundation Grant, the first at Wayne State University/Wayne Health, to conduct research focused on plastic surgery education. He has also been recognized as an Hours Detroit Magazine Top Doc for several years.  So far in his career, he is most proud of his ex-residents who have gone on to be plastic surgeons who he would let operate on himself or any of his loved ones.

Dr. Almufarrej is an explorer by nature. In his free time, he loves traveling, biking, being outdoors, going to the beach, and spending time with his family and friends.
