Meet the Provider: Faisal Yasir Ridha al-timimi, M.D.

May 5, 2021

Faisal Yasir Ridha al-timimi, M.D., department of Ophthalmology, joined Wayne Health as a glaucoma fellow in July 2018 and as full-time faculty in July 2019. Dr. Ridha has special interest in treating and taking care of glaucoma patients.

With the strong belief that there is a need for quality eye care in urban settings such as Detroit, Dr. Ridha chose Wayne Health because he believes that caring for the people of Detroit is a great privilege. The interactions with the individuals in the Metro Detroit community and the gratitude of his patients are what he enjoys most about working with his patients at Wayne Health.

Dr. Ridha attended Northeast Ohio Medical University for their BS/MD program with his undergraduate education at Kent State University. He was first exposed to ophthalmology at an affiliated hospital in Akron where he developed his adoration for the practice. He believes the best part of ophthalmology is being able to improve someone’s quality of life in such a quick way through vision correction. He completed his residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington DC where he was awarded Chief Resident and the Resident Leadership Award, and he completed his fellowship at Kresge Eye Institute.

For Dr. Ridha, there is no such thing as a typical day in his practice. He enjoys working at a walk-in ophthalmology clinic because he never knows what he will see, and that challenge of the unknown makes his work fun and inspiring. His time is split between practicing ophthalmology in the clinic, teaching, operating and taking care of veterans at the John Dingell VA hospital.

Dr. Ridha believes that patient care in ophthalmology must be individualized to each patient. He believes that every patient has different treatment needs, goals and limitations for their eye health. When with a patient, he focuses on what is most important and practical for his patient to provide them with the best care and possible outcomes. His patients biggest fears are losing their vision and independence, and he understands that reassurance and trust cannot be overstated. He finds restoring vision with cataract surgery to be the most rewarding experience in his medical career. Helping patients go from having little or no vision to often having 20/20 vision after surgery is extremely rewarding. He is proud of his ability to help patients restore their quality of life. He is also proud to be a teacher and mentor to current trainees in ophthalmology.

In his free time, Dr. Ridha loves spending time outdoors with his wife and three young children.
