Meet the Provider: Geoffrey Potts, M.D.

June 30, 2021

Geoffrey Potts, M.D., department of Dermatology, joined Wayne Health in 2014 as a resident, later becoming a faculty member in 2017. Dr. Potts has special interests in hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (eczema).

Dr. Potts joined Wayne Health because of its important role in caring for the population of Detroit and the region as a whole, and the opportunity to care for patients at many different hospital systems, as needed.

Dr. Potts attended Oakland University in Rochester, MI for undergrad and Wayne State University School of Medicine for medical school. At OU, he acquired basic science knowledge by majoring in biology and minoring in anthropology. At WSU’s School of Medicine, he learned basic and advanced medicine through clerkships at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Receiving, Children’s Hospital of Michigan and various Metro Detroit clinics. From 2012-2014, he completed a clinical research fellowship at St. Louis University as a sub-investigator for many investigator-initiated research studies and sponsored clinical trials. Dr. Potts chose dermatology because it’s a specialty that provides comfort and cures for diseases of the skin, hair and nails with behavioral, medical, surgical and other treatments.

During his clerkships, Dr. Potts connected with a diverse patient population in Metro Detroit and volunteered his time to care for the area’s underserved population. He enjoys working with people from multi-cultural, ethnically diverse communities the most. A person’s skin tone can affect how a dermatologic condition presents. Through education and experience, Dr. Potts is able to identify unique variations in the color and shape of various rashes in people with a wide range of skin tones.

Dr. Potts treats patients as if they were part of his own family. He provides each patient with adequate time to address all of their issues and listens to them intently. He offers advice on appropriate care, while including the patient in the decision-making process. He understands that every patient is unique and a diagnosis is often found by sitting down and listening to them give the answer.

Other than occasional inpatient consultations at hospitals, a typical day for Dr. Potts involves seeing patients at the Wayne Health clinics in Dearborn and Troy. The clinics have a variable mix of dermatology patients of all ages from infants to elderly with a wide array of ailments. Not one clinic day is the same and not one patient gets the same treatment. Dr. Potts also conducts clinical research trials studying new treatments for dermatologic diseases.

In addition, as a WSU School of Medicine faculty member, Dr. Potts educates medical students and dermatology residents. He is especially proud of his work teaching the future of his specialty and medicine in general to the next generation of physicians. He won the 2019-2020 Faculty of the Year Award, chosen by WSU’s dermatology residents.

His evenings and weekends are often filled with his three daughters’ activities, such as soccer, swim and dance. He also enjoys yard work, home maintenance and technology.
