Meet the provider: Maher Fakhouri, M.D.

Maher Fakhouri, M.D., Department of Neurology, has special interests in clinical neurology teaching, pain medicine, headache and electromyography.

Dr. Fakhouri received his medical degree from Damascus University Medical School in 1982. He interned at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH, from 1986-1987 followed by completing his residency at the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Neurology from 1987-1990. He completed back to back fellowships; the first being an EMG/neuromuscular fellowship at the University and of Minnesota from 1990-1991. The second being in pain management at the University of Cincinnati from 1991-1992.

Dr. Fakhouri is Associate Professor in Neurology at Wayne State University, and has served as a faculty member in the Department of Neurology since 1995. He has served as the Clerkship Director for the Department of Neurology since 2000. He recently served on The Advisory Committee on pain and symptom management, State of Michigan (Representing Wayne State University School of Medicine), appointed by Governor Rick Snyder in July 2015. In the past he served as a reviewer for The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Clinical Neurology Subject Examination, The American Institute of Biological Sciences Chronic Pain/Orthopedic Injury Evaluation Panel, reviewer for the Journal of Neurological Sciences and the Headache Journal (Journal of the American Headache Society). He is currently a member on the Clerkship Committee at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a member of the Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Neurology, Clinical Competency Committee. He previously was a staff member of the Department of Neurology at the University of Cincinnati. He is certified by The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (1992), The American Board of Pain Medicine, formerly The American College of Pain Medicine (1993), and The American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (1994, recertified in 2004).
