Meet the Provider: Robert Tomsak, M.D.

May 13, 2021

Robert Tomsak, M.D., department of Ophthalmology, joined Wayne Heath in March 2010. Dr. Tomsak specializes in neuro-ophthalmology, a subspecialty that bridges neurology and ophthalmology and focuses on disorders that affect eye movements and the brain’s processing of visual information

Dr. Tomsak chose Wayne Health because he enjoys working with a team of physicians with different medical specialties who collaborate with each other. Working closely together with other Wayne Health providers allows his patients to receive a full spectrum of comprehensive care.

Dr. Tomsak attended Case Western Reserve University in the Medical Scientist Training Program where he earned both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in 1977. He completed a doctoral dissertation in the department of Pathology where he researched chemicals that cause cancer. Following a residency in Ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic, he was selected for a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He was able to train with many experts in the field of ophthalmology who helped to advance his medical knowledge.

Being visually-oriented and having a long-time interest in photography, Dr. Tomsak was drawn to ophthalmology. During his clinical training, he also developed an interest in neurology. Fortunately, the subspecialty of neuro-ophthalmology allowed him to work in both of his fields of interest. Dr. Tomsak sees patients seven half-days a week, and he is often accompanied by a rotating, first-year ophthalmology resident. He spends the rest of his time doing patient-related office work, formal didactic teaching and clinical research.

Dr. Tomsak’s patients have taught him to be humble and to appreciate that every patient is different, no matter where you are practicing medicine. He offers each patient the best care that he can. When seeing patients, he strives to answer three questions even if they are not asked. These questions are: “What is wrong with me?,” “What can be done about what is wrong with me?,” and “What is going to happen in the future?” He knows that every patient has these lingering questions, and he wants to ensure that they receive all the information that they need about their medical condition.

In his free time, Dr. Tomsak enjoys photography, reading non-medical literature and spending time outdoors.
