Meet the provider: Sami Gauthier, NP-C

Sami Gauthier, family nurse practitioner in the department of Family Medicine, joined Wayne Health in Detroit and Troy in September 2020. Certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), Ms. Gauthier has completed numerous clinical rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics and family medicine. Her areas of interest in family medicine include management of acute and chronic diseases, health education, disease prevention and gender and age-related screenings.

Ms. Gauthier joined Wayne Health because she admired Wayne Health’s commitment to providing more than clinical care, by looking at the social factors that impact a patient’s health and well-being and integrating this information into each patient’s individualized plan of care. She enjoys working within the Metro Detroit community because it allows her to engage with and serve her own local community. Metro Detroit is a historically underserved area, and she is happy and proud to see so many people dedicated and motivated to address the health care needs of vulnerable populations at Wayne Health.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Chamberlain University. To have a larger impact on people’s lives, she decided to expand her nursing role after being a bedside registered nurse for five years. She became a family medicine nurse practitioner (NP) because she loves patient interaction and nursing care.

A typical day for Ms. Gauthier includes a mix of direct patient care, medication management, ordering tests, reviewing test results, patient education, patient advocacy, administrative duties, and occasional case management. She wants her patients to know that she truly cares about improving and maintaining their health. She genuinely listens to patient’s concerns, respects patients’ beliefs and opinions, and is transparent in her communication with patients. She wholeheartedly wants every patient to lead healthy lives and to have successful treatment outcomes.

Ms. Gauthier’s patients have taught her about empathy and the power of believing in one another. Showing them how much she cares and believes in them will most certainly impact their self-esteem and improve their resilience. She strives to build a strong rapport with her patients and genuinely wishes the best for each and every of them. One of her goals is to positively impact each patient. One of her favorite quotes is, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” by Theodore Roosevelt. She is especially proud that she has followed her dreams and now gets to live her passion of positively impacting people’s lives through her career.

In her free time, Ms. Gauthier enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoys outdoor activities, cooking and watching sports.
