Meet the provider: Stanley M. Berry, M.D.
July 27, 2021
Stanley M. Berry, M.D., Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, joined Wayne Health in 2018, but has been affiliated with Wayne State University and Hutzel Women’s Hospital for the past 33 years. Dr. Berry is board certified in Maternal-Fetal Medicine – taking care of women with high-risk pregnancies.
Dr. Berry chose Wayne Health because it has a group of excellent practicing physicians who are outstanding in their chosen field. He enjoys interacting with the Metro Detroit patients and exposing medical students and residents to the hands-on practice of medicine. He currently serves as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne Health.
Dr. Berry attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio as well as Macalester College in St. Paul, MN for undergrad. He later attended the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, MN. Macalester College encouraged him to have a breadth of actual or intellectual experience, which helps him relate to patients. In addition, he was active in theatre, playing several different parts. This experience helped him to have a comfort level with patients and their families that he might not have otherwise developed as quickly. He completed a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Wayne State University School of Medicine/Hutzel Women’s Hospital under the direction of Sidney F. Bottoms, M.D..
Dr. Berry chose Women’s Health because he thoroughly enjoyed his medical school experience in obstetrics and gynecology and fell in love with being able to provide care to women while reassuring their significant others at the same time.
Dr. Berry is not satisfied until his patients understand their diagnosis and treatment plan. He remains open to questions from parents and their families, and for appropriate care plan modifications when requested by his patients. His patients have taught him that all questions can’t be answered by a yes or no, and that the grey areas are important. They have also taught him that the vast majority of women will do anything to have a healthy baby. His most impactful experience within his medical career to-date was when he delivered the second child of a couple whose first baby died of crib death, and the parents wept with joy in the delivery room.
Dr. Berry has been honored with numerous teaching awards, as well as the Distinguished Citizen Citation from Macalister College. He is most proud of the care that he has provided to help so many women through high-risk pregnancies, and the impact he has had on resident and medical student education.
In his free time, Dr. Berry enjoys creative writing, bicycling and spending time with his children, grandchildren and wife.
