Meet the provider: Wazim Mohamed, M.D.

March 9, 2022

Wazim Mohamed, M.D., Department of Neurology, joined Wayne Health in 2014. His special interests include neurotrauma, critical care neurology and status epilepticus.

Dr. Mohamed went to Kasturbra Medical College and Manipal University in India. He often worked in settings with limited resources and learned how to navigate through situations. This became particularly useful to him during the peak of COVID when resources were limited. He completed fellowships in both neurocritical care and vascular neurology (stroke).

Dr. Mohamed joined Wayne Health after completing both his training and fellowships at Detroit Receiving Hospital. His mentor, Dr. Khan, Chair of Neurology at the time, recruited him. He enjoys working with the resilient Metro Detroit community and appreciates how thankful they are for the care rendered to them.

Dr. Mohamed challenges himself to never stop thinking. He is always trying to figure out ways to get his patients to their best results. His most impactful experience with a patient so far is when he was treating a Detroit firefighter’s son who was admitted to the ICU for 6 months due to refractory seizures and a medically induced coma. The patient was successfully treated and discharged. The patient’s father, whenever he comes to the hospital as EMS, comes up to the unit and shows Dr. Mohamed pictures of his son growing up.

So far in his career, Dr. Mohamed is most proud of becoming an associate professor and medical director of the NeuroICU at a fairly young age. Dr. Mohamed won the Wayne State University School of Medicine College Teaching Award in 2021.

In his free time, Dr. Mohamed enjoys playing tennis. That is his protected time away from everything.
