Wayne Health and DMC Emergency Medicine docs team up for cardiac health screenings from Wayne State University School of Medicine

A coalition of Wayne State University medical students, Wayne Health and Detroit Medical Center Emergency Medicine physicians recently came together to offer heart health screenings for adolescent boys who play football.

Led by DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital Emergency Department physician Luda Khait-Vlisides, M.D., and Wayne Health Mobile Unit clinical coordinator Bethany Foster at the Corner Ballpark Detroit, home of the Detroit Police Athletic League, students were given the opportunity to have health screenings performed between football scrimmages. Screenings included checking blood pressure and pulse oximetry, an electrocardiogram performed and reviewed by a DMC and Wayne State University physician, as well as a focused echocardiogram performed by specialized staff and physicians.

The screenings took place during the Youth Football Scrimmage Games and Resource Fair, held Aug. 21.

In addition to overall health awareness, the event sought to identify and provide appropriate follow up for teenagers who may be susceptible to sudden cardiac death and other genetic cardiogenic abnormalities.
