Wayne Health Midwifery Services Provide Added Care and Comfort

October 10, 2020

It goes without saying that 2020 has brought on a number of challenges for just about everyone in metro Detroit. But having to manage a pregnancy during the COVID-19 pandemic could bring an added level of stress for anyone.

Detroit resident Sharea’ Smith has been a patient of Wayne Health (formerly University Physician Group) since her early 20s and has long trusted the practice and its providers. Once she became pregnant in late 2019, she decided that having a midwife would be extremely helpful. Sharea’ had some specific wishes for her pregnancy and delivery, and the Midwifery team at Wayne Health did not disappoint.

“My baby’s health and my own health were a huge priority obviously and throughout the whole process they respected my wishes,” Sharea’ says. “My midwife helped to keep me calm and talked me through every step of the way, including the delivery.”

Sharea’ was also impressed that her midwife stayed with her for the entire pregnancy, even long after the “work day” was over. It was a simple, but highly appreciated example of how the Wayne Healthy Midwifery team treated her like family.

“With COVID we had a plan and everything was managed in a way to protect us,” Sharea’ said, adding that all staff wore masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) around her before, during and after the birth of her daughter A’myla. “The room was sparking clean. Everyone was courteous. I would recommend them to anyone.”
