Wayne Health neurocritical care / neurotrauma services

The Neurocritical Care Unit serves patients across southeast Michigan with the following conditions:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (intracranial monitoring, brain parenchymal oxygen tension monitoring, interventions to prevent secondary brain injury)
  • Ischemic strokes (thrombolysis treatment to dissolve blood clots, interventional procedures)
  • Hemorrhagic strokes
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage (interventions to treat aneurysm and to detect vasospasm, a sudden contraction of the walls of an artery)
  • Status epilepticus – a prolonged, life threatening seizure (long-term EEG monitoring)
  • Bacterial/viral encephalitis – brain inflammation caused by infection
  • Post-cardiac arrest care
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Neuromuscular emergencies – including myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barre syndrome

Wayne Health’s Neurocritical Care and Neurotrauma team consists of neurologists and neurosurgeons who provide comprehensive, expert treatment for a wide range of neurological conditions. Neurocritical Care services include:

  • Intracranial (brain) pressure monitoring
  • Respiratory support
  • Parenteral (intravenous) nutrition
  • Continuous electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring (measuring electrical activity in the brain)
  • Pain management
  • Vasospasm treatment (increasing blood flow to the brain)
